An injury to Marcus Trescothick capped a bad day for Somerset as they went down to a four-wicket Friends Provident Trophy defeat by Gloucestershire at Bristol.

The opening batsman damaged an achilles tendon while fielding and came straight off to put his foot in a bucket of ice. He will need a fitness test before the LV County Championship clash with Sussex at Taunton, starting on Wednesday.

Justin Langer's unbeaten 112 and a blistering half-century from Peter Trego gave Somerset hope as they posted 290-6, having lost the toss.

But the bowlers had no answer to the skills of Craig Spearman, who rattled up 140 not out to guide Gloucestershire from a perilous 159-6 to 294-6 with ten balls to spare.

After the game Trescothick told somersetcountycc.co.uk: "I don't think the injury is serious, but it's the same foot I had an operation on not so long ago so I need to get it checked out.

"I just felt something when I dived in the field. By coming off straight away I have hopefully minimised any damage and hopefully I will be okay for Wednesday."

Of the game, Marcus added: "While Craig Spearman was there we could never feel totally confident of winning. He is a very good player and it was an excellent innings."

Gloucestershire suffered a blow before the start when skipper Jon Lewis strained a groin muscle in the warm-up. His place went to youngster Tom Stayt.

Trescothick had made 14 before being caught behind off Steve Kirby (2-58). Craig Kieswetter (30) then helped Langer take the score to 89, but when he fell and James Hildreth and Ian Blackwell followed in quick succession Gloucestershire were on top.

Langer held things together, receiving good support from Zander de Bruyn (42) in a stand of 72. But it was 177-6 when Trego marched out to join his captain.

He hit 6 fours and a six in a swashbuckling innings of 56 not out as Somerset scored 78 runs from the last six overs.

Anthony Ireland was ordered out of Gloucestershire's attack for bowling a second no-ball full-toss above waist-height and stand-in captain Alex Gidman went for 18 off an over.

Langer kept on accumulating, hitting 12 fours in his 118-ball innings, and Trego supplied the acceleration just when it was needed.

Gloucestershire lost Hamish Marshall in the first over of their reply, lbw to Alfonso Thomas, and Marcus North followed with the score on 58, caught at cover by James Hildreth for 14 off Trego.

Gidman's 37 gave his side hope until he fell at 75-3. Chris Taylor and David Brown could play only cameo innings and when Mark Hardinges fell first ball to Steffan Jones (3-53) Gloucestershire looked out of it at 159-6.

But Spearman had other ideas and looked a class act in moving to his century off 90 balls, with 8 fours and 2 sixes, the second of which sailed over mid-wicket off de Bruyn to bring up his ton.

Adshead was the ideal foil, pushing singles and collecting the odd well-struck boundary in making his 41 at a run-a-ball. There were 63 needed off the last ten overs and no Somerset bowler looked like breaking through.

Somerset have now won two and lost two of five Friends Provident matches after a second successive defeat and need to return to winning ways against Worcestershire at Taunton on Sunday.
