SOMERSET UNDER 11S IN 2007
The Under 11s started the 2007 season at Newport in a low scoring game against Gwent. Good accurate bowling and keen fielding saw Somerset defend a total of only 55 to win by 17 runs. Liam Ward 3 for 6, Tim Rouse 2 for 5 and Alex Main 2 for 8 were the main wicket takers.
Another low scoring game at Taunton Vale saw Somerset successfully defend a total of 88. A Captains knock from Cameron Steel 30, John Stratton 18 and an obdurate innings from Sonny Dennett 5, when it looked like Buckinghamshire would quickly bowl us out, were the main features of the batting. The bowlers had the opposition reeling at 22 for 7 but the tail wagged before Somerset won by 22 runs. Ed Cawse returned the remarkable figures of 5 for 3 and Alister Balcombe 3 for 2.
Wales defeated us at Millfield Prep School by 7 wickets. Making only 88 in the allotted 45 overs was always going to be difficult to defend, on a quickly drying outfield. Alister Balcombe top scored with 23. whilst John Stratton and Ollie Burland contributed 15 a piece. J Lawler 37 not out held the Wales innings together as Alex Main returned the only figures of note 2 for 12.
Somerset started the King's Festival in some style, defeating Worcestershire by 8 wickets with 21 overs to spare. Tim Rouse with 4 for 17 was the main tormentor of our opponents. An opening partnership of 92 between Will Abell 37 and John Stratton 58 set us on the way to victory.
Unfortunately our bowlers had an off day, giving away far too many extras in the game against Gloucestershire. Tim Rouse 77 and Patrick Grieshaber 32 had put us in a good position when we made 167 for 7. However Gloucester won an exciting game in the last over by 3 wickets. Rain then caused the Nottinghamshire game to be cancelled.
This though did not prevent the squad from enjoying a super experience in attending the Festival.
Coach Paul Lawrence praised the Somerset side for their team spirit and enthusiasm throughout the Season. Thanks go to Derek Strong for scoring during the season, and Millfield Prep School and Taunton Vale for allowing us use of their facilities.
